Lawmaker Wants Gamers to “Quiet Down” While Bashing Them
California State Senator Leland Yee should be no stranger to gamers after he introduced the 2005 bill that made sales of M rated games to minors a crime, which was later struck down by the Supreme Court.
Well, he still wants games regulated, and apparently doesn’t like how hard gamers are defending them. In an interview, Yee shared that he thought, “Gamers have got to just quiet down[...] Gamers have no credibility in this argument. This is all about their lust for violence and the industry’s lust for money. This is a billion-dollar industry. This is about their self-interest.”
So, sit back and take your lumps like a good gamer while the lawmakers decide what’s best for you.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but this writer personally tends to speak up not just in defense of gaming, but of myself. When someone attacks my primary hobby in a way that paints it as some hazard that could turn me into a psychopath at any moment, I’m likely to speak up and prove the content of my character is defined by more than the contents of my shelves and computer directories.
Of course, The San Francisco Chronicle points out that even with violent games being some of the most visible, Wii Sports and The Sims are pretty impressively popular. Let’s just hope the gaming industry’s opposition doesn’t notice how many televisions have been the victims of Wii related accidents, and try to spin it as being induced by rage.

This guy needs to go… And soon.
This guy needs to find something more important to feed his time into. Everyone I know are considered gamers and none of them are violent or psychopathic. This guy needs to realize that it takes a special unstable person to make violence from a video game. These people have a hard time facing reality and blur the fictional and non fictional realities. It is not gamers in general it is the unstable ones which is the same in any field and any topic.
I play games and I’m not a violent person, but I wouldn’t be sad if Leland Yee was burned at the stake.
He has no right to tell anybody to silence. We are the people who created this billion dollar industry by being the rightful consumer. Publishers are the ones who create games based on what we want to see. And by the way, politicians should shut up about trying to stop the violence in video games, because your argument of linking it to Sandy Hook is invalid. Physical violence serves no link to video games. And if you dumbass politicians want to believe that, then encourage enforcement of ESRB.
Being a senator in the USA is the ultimate lust for power, this guy knows all he has to do is serve a few years and take his seat on some pharmaceutical company honorary chair for life…sure this guys stinks of corruption….
Glad to see he’s advocating that people who make up the electorate of his state not take part in having a voice in the legislative process. Just lovely.
Get your fucking head out of your ass, put any one of us in your seat and we’ll do you job a hundred times better.
Step down, yeah I’ll step down on your FACE!
Maybe we should exercise or constitutional rights to Freedom of Speech and not vote him into office in the future.
