So if you have watched any of my videos you must be thinking that Redfirefly is very cheesy. That might be so, but the whole point is to win the game, isn’t it? As cheesy as somethings might seem there are actual techniques to any of the rushes you see. This week we will be reviewing different types of “Cannon Rushing”. If a cannon rush is poorly executed, it can back fire on you.
How To Cannon Rush :
The Basic Build
Pylon -> Forge -> Cannon
Steps to a basic build:
1. Build 2 probes so it’s 8/10
2. Build a pylon
3. Build 2 probes
4. Build a forge
5. Build a pylon near opponent’s base
6. Build 2 cannons
7. Build another pylon and cannons
Hidden Pylon Build
Pylon -> Go to Opponent’s Base -> Forge -> Pylon on Opponent’s Base -> Forge
How to Cannon Rush Zerg
Cannon rushing zerg isn’t easy because of the “creep”. Creep is the ground muck that is generated by zerg and only zerg can build on it. It can restrict any other race from building on that land. So when you cannon rush you can’t get very close to the zerg’s main base or mineral line because of the creep.
You can still utilize cannons in order to block your opponent’s ability to expand or even move anywhere else in the base. So you would do a basic cannon build, except you would build cannons surrounding the creep. Then to get in closer you will need to build Gateways and get some units such as zealots to take down the actual base. This still cripple your opponnent.
Now proxy pylons are very useful especially when you convert your Gateway to a Warp Gate. This build is in this section because even so it’s not a full cannon rush it it still utilizes cannons.
Now to do this build you need a pylon near the edge of your opponent’s base so that when you get the “line of sight” you can warp in the unit of your choice. “Line of Sight” refers being able to see the upper land. In Starcraft 2 you can’t attack something on higher land on you when you can’t see it. This can be countered by using air, observer, scan or something so you can increase your “line of sight” and see the upper land.
When you build that pylon you also build at least 2 cannons so that if anyone tries to destroy the pylon is protected. This only applies if the “line of sight” is maintained.
Using Cannons To Wall Block Your Opponent from Expanding
The purpose of this is to wall off your opponents so they can’t expand and to just slow them down. Walling them off can produce several results to your benefit :
1. Force your opponents to go air
2. Slow them down
3. Annoy them
It’s most beneficial if you have one ally work on the cannon rush wall while the others work on building an army. You can rely the cannon wall alone to take down your opponent, it can only slow them down or force them to go air but can not defeat your opponent alone.
Once you build the wall, then you need to expand and build your own army.
